Sumner School:
Klockner’s flagship commercial project
- the crumbling Sumner School - was saved by protestors literally
standing in front of the wrecking ball in 1983. We rebuilt the entire wooden
structure, including restoration of its
massive joist systems spanning more than 25 feet in the classrooms. We assembled
a team of specialist
craftsmen from numerous countries. With on-site shop capabilities, we replaced
every architectural door and
window. The uniquely shaped niches and alcoves were created onsite with quarter-sawn
red oak material,
including the finely crafted pedestals for the busts of Charles Sumner. This
project was rewarded with several
notable awards.
Liberian Chancery:
The Liberian Embassy Chancery had been fire bombed during
that country’s
civil war. It needed a
complete gutting and rebuilding. Klockner & Company collaborated with Opus
3 Construction, both managing
the project and performing the finer trade work.
Watergate Hotel Lobby:
This award winning lobby renovation for Clark Construction (formerly Omni) highlighted
our skills with
curves and angles both in the drywall finishes and woodwork throughout.
National Museum of Women in the Arts:
A DC landmark project, Clark Construction once again called upon Klockner to
restore the historic
aspects of windows, finishes, and fine millwork. This project garnered several
prestigious awards. The museum
hosts fashionable formal events regularly. |
